1st draft: A Guide to Building Ethical Orchid Collections & Societies

A Guide to Building Ethical Orchid Collections & Societies.

In collaboration with orchid societies around the world, we are developing a new resource that presents suggestions for how orchid societies can help promote best practices among our members, events and community -- to foster sustainable collections and societies. It seeks to balance our enjoyment of plants with our shared commitment to species conservation in the wild.

We now have a draft resource for further public comment by orchid societies through 01 June 2024 -- both those who have already participated and those who have not yet been involved.

Download here:

The draft suggests key topics, principles and positions that societies can edit and adopt. It is not a fixed set of rules, nor will every point be relevant or appropriate for all societies. Our aim is to create a resource that can be used across the world.

Please consider sharing insights from your society by:

  • Sending your comments to jacob.phelps@gmail.com by 01 June, 2024.

  • Providing comments using comment bubbles and track changes in Word. If you need to provide comments in another way, please contact us first.

  • Coordinating to provide comment behalf of societies within a single document, rather than individual members. This is necessary to control the volume of feedback and because the document seeks to build consensus views of societies.

  • Letting us know if you would like your society to be acknowledged as having contributed

This is a draft document, developed based on interviews with orchid societies around the world, conducted by members of the IUCN SSC Orchid Specialist Group – Global Trade Program. We are a volunteer group of orchid experts and enthusiasts, committed to sustainable orchid trade and to reducing illegal orchid trade.
